why do you have a flip phone?

“it’s the new status symbol” -my coworker derisively because apparently a $130 flip phone is a status symbol but a $1000 iphone isn’t ??? whatever anyway

when i was younger i always thought i would love the internet forever and that i’d always adopt new technology – i loved to play games and learn new things on the computer. i got my first smartphone in 2013 and i loved it. so convenient to have the internet always around! :)

now i’m so burnt out. there are parts of it i still love but the big websites are so soul sucking and gross and i’m tired of giving them my data. i’m so sick of manufactured outrage and always analyzing whether a post i see on my feed is ai and people scrolling reels in public with no headphones and closing one app just to open another one just to close that and open the first one like a tiger in the zoo pacing its cage.

i’m not going low tech but i am going slow tech. flip phone but it still has google maps and signal and a web browser (but it takes a minute for each page to load and the screen is too small to enjoy The Scroll), iPod with all my favorite Totally Legally Downloaded music (don’t worry, i want to support the artists and have a giant list of all the albums i want to buy eventually), kindle that i read library books on, website that i have to actually make instead of just tapping out a quick update on facebook.

if you see me with my iPhone it’s only because i’m playing board games but eventually i will stop doing that too and keep it completely off unless i really need it

that’s all thanks for coming to my ted talk
